HoudahGeo 5.2.3HoudahGeo 5.2.3
Know where you took that photo!

Versatile. Dependable.

HoudahGeo is a photo geocoding & geotagging tool. It enables you to assign pictures to the locations where they were taken.

Industry standards. Industrial strength.

HoudahGeo writes industry standard EXIF, XMP and IPTC metadata tags. The visible image itself is not altered in the process. Images are not re-compressed!

In addition to JPEG, HoudahGeo supports a large number RAW image file formats as well as XMP sidecars. Please use the demo version to verify compatibility with your camera's image files.

Easy to use 3-step interface

Step 1: Load

  • Load images from your photo libraries
  • Load images from the file system
  • Import GPS track logs and waypoints from many brands of GPS devices
  • Load GPX, NMEA, LOG, … tack log files created by third party products
  • Configure camera time zone and clock error for accurate geocoding

Step 2: Process

  • Geocoding from GPS track logs is automatic
  • Use the build-in map to double-check and adjust locations
  • Manually geocode images by pointing out locations on the map or in Google Earth
  • Geocode from reference photos taken using a GPS-enabled camera or phone
  • Reverse geocode: determine location names and ground altitude from GPS coordinates
  • Enter metadata: coordinates, location names, title, description, keywords, …

Step 3: Output

  • Write EXIF, XMP and IPC metadata tags to image versions, image masters or XMP sidecars
  • Notify iPhoto / Aperture: transfer geodata to the Places databases
  • Google Earth KMZ/KML export: see your images in the context of the locations where they were taken
  • Publish to Evernote: safeguard your images. Sync them to your Evernote enabled devices
  • Upload to EveryTrail: publish a log of your travels
  • Flickr upload: share your geotagged photos

iPhoto, Aperture & Lightroom integration

HoudahGeo interfaces with your preferred photo library. Browse and select images right from within HoudahGeo.

When working with iPhoto or Aperture, HoudahGeo uses current edited versions for export operations. When writing EXIF/XMP/IPTC tags, it offers the option to seamlessly switch over to working on the original master file.

HoudahGeo may also notify the Places database of iPhoto’09/11 and Aperture 3 when it makes new geotags available.

Automatic geocoding

Geocode images from a GPS track log with a single click. HoudahGeo supports many brands and models of GPS track loggers. For other devices, you need to use third party software to extract GPX or NMEA track logs from the device.

HoudahGeo may also geocode photos to the nearest waypoint.

Geocoding from Reference Photos

Many modern phones, like the iPhone 3G, have built-in GPS receivers as well as cameras. They take geocoded photos. Unfortunately photos coming from camera phones are often times low in quality.

HoudahGeo is able to use those geocoded photos as reference points when geocoding your regular photos. Indeed, when HoudahGeo sees that both a geocoded photo and one that isn't have been taken during the same time frame, it can assume that both were taken at the same location.

While taking photos, you should take one reference picture at each location where you stop. At each location you will also take a number of pictures using your regular digital cameras.

HoudahGeo will be able to propagate geotags from a reference photo to photos taken within the same time frame.

Manual geocoding

When no GPS device is available, photos may be geocoded manually by pointing to locations in Google Earth or using the integrated map interface.

EXIF/XMP/IPTC export

HoudahGeo may write GPS coordinates and other metadata to EXIF/XMP/IPTC tags of many image formats (JPEG, RAW, DNG, CR2, …). The visible image itself is not altered in the process. These tags may be read by numerous software products and web services. E.g. iPhoto, Aperture, Lightroom, Panoramio, Flickr, …

Google Earth export

Create a Google Earth KMZ file from your HoudahGeo project. This allows for viewing your photos within Google Earth. This is a terrific way for sharing photos. Dazzle your friends, empower your business. E.g. a real estate agent may publish photos of available properties pinned to the appropriate locations.

KML export

Advanced users may opt to create KML files from their HoudahGeo projects. This allows for use in Google Earth, Google Maps as well as other applications supporting the emerging KML standard.

EveryTrail publishing

Upload your projects as trips to EveryTrail. View and share your trips as slideshows. See your trip on a map.
